The image portfolios on this website represent a small selection of species and topics from my library, which covers a wide range of subjects from Ireland and parts of Europe. Virtually all of my photography now is shot using digital capture. Having a natural history background is, I believe, a distinct advantage when it comes to capturing images of the natural world. Good and consistent nature photography is a partnership between technical competency and having a clear understanding of the habits and behavior of your subjects. There are no short cuts? Both are inextricably linked. Although I have always considered myself as a natural history and conservation photographer, covering all aspects of natural history photography. I am perhaps better known through my books and writing as a macro specialist, both in photographic and natural history publications. I have, over the years spent a considerable amount time on this particular aspect. A large percentage of my photographic time is committed to conservation work in my own country. I have formed important partnerships with many leading conservation agencies, documenting the flora and fauna and working in conjunction with various high profile recording projects throughout Ireland. As photographers there is still a lot that we can contribute in terms of documenting photographically the distribution of our own flora and fauna. This is were we can give something back. Photography has now replaced the museum specimen and images can tell us so much more about the life history and behavior of a subject than a set specimen gathering dust in a museum can. As photographers we strive to create images that have pictorial appeal and impact. However we should also be mindful of the subject's welfare and preservation at all times something that seems less of an issue in recent years. The most accomplished nature photographers are also good field researchers and strive to portray their subjects in a truly natural way. Finally I hope that this website encourages you to explore the beauty and complexity of the natural world and develop a greater understanding and appreciation of its fragility and the subjects whose fate ultimately rest in our hands.
